Subject: 32bit ASM
I'm trying to convert some standard (16bit I guess) asm code for TASM to work
with a 32bit compiler while the program is in protected mode. The code
is the Dr. Dobbs Journal XSharp code (by Abrash) for MODE X VGA programming.
I know I can add .model flat and .386 to get it to link properly, but the
code doesn't function properly. Is it possible to make sure all the
allignment is still correct and still have it properly callable from the
32bit C program?
Any info would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

SAC '94
=======
SAC is the annual conference of the ACM Special Interest
Group on Applied Computing (SIGAPP). For the past eight
- 2 -
years, SACs have been a primary forum for applied computing
practitioners and researchers. Once again, SAC'94 will be
held in conjunction with the 1994 ACM Computer Science
Conference in Phoenix. This year, SAC'94 will bring together
five additional ACM Special Interest Groups: SIGAPL, SIGBIO.
SIGBIT, SIGFORTH and SIGSMALL/PC, each one of which will
have their own track within SAC'94.
Although papers and proposals, tutorials and workshops which
deal with the conference themes, namely, STRATEGIC TECHNOL-
OGY TRANSFER and INTELLIGENT BUSINESS APPLICATIONS, are
especially encouraged, papers which deal with all areas of
applied computing are solicited. Of particular interests in
AI, Biomolecular Computing, Cognitive Science, Computational
Biology-Chemistry-Physics and Geosciences, Reliability,
Electronic Libraries, Multi-Media, Geographical Information
Systems, Image Processing, Logic and Symbolic Programming,
Office Automation, Software Reliability and Intelligent Sys-
tems. Proposals for special sessions and panels are also
encouraged.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
=========================
Original papers from any aspects of applied computing will
be considered for presentation and publication in the SAC'94
Proceedings. This specifically includes these categories of
submissions: (1) original and unpublished research articles,
(2) reports of innovative applications in the arts, sci-
ences, engineering, business, government and industry, and
(3) reports of successful technology transfer to new problem
domains. Each category of submission will be reviewed by
peer groups appropriate to that category. Accepted papers
in all categories will be published in the Conference
Proceedings. Expanded versions of selected papers from all
categories will be considered for publication in the
ACM/SIGAPP quarterly Applied Computing Review.
In order to facilitate the blind external review process,
submission guidelines must be strictly adhered to:
+ Submit 5 copies of original manuscript to Joseph Urban,
Program Co-chair, at the address below.
+ Author name(s) and address(es) MUST NOT appear in the
body of the paper, and self-reference should be in the
third person.
+ The body of paper should not exceed 5,000 words (20
pages, double-spaced) without prior approval.
+ Separate cover sheet should be attached to each copy,
containing the (1) title, (2) author(s) and
affiliation(s), (3) address (including email and fax
- 3 -
number) to which correspondence should be addressed.
+ Papers relating to SIGAPL, SIGBIO, SIGBIT, SIGFORTH and
SIGSMALL/PC participation should be clearly identified
as such so that they may be directed to appropriate
track chairs. Look for further information in these
SIG newsletters.
+ ALL PAPERS AND PANEL PROPOSALS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY

Subject: data compression programs such as Stacker
Recent postings about difficulties apparently connected with Stacker have
caused me to rethink my plan to purchase a program instead of hardware
memory upgrades for my 386sx 16mhz w/40meg hd. Two questions:
1) What kinds of problems can a relatively unsophisticated user (me)
anticipate with any disk compression program, such as what happens to
data on back-up; is there increased risk of crashing, etc.
I use PCTools for backup and undelete.
2) Does anyone know anything about the cut-rate disk compression
program being offered by DoubleDisk for $40, half the price of Stacker?
thanks.

You can also try setting the LIM page frame to E000 - another region
that EMM386 doesn't include by default.

The EMM386 driver takes some of the upper memory to use as a "page
frame," which is required to emulate EMS. Also, EMS add-on cards
would grab some of the memory between the 640K and 1024K (called
the upper memory area) and map the "page frame" to that area.
The reason this is so is that the 8086/8088 (as well as 286, 386,
and 486 in "real mode") will only address 1MB of memory, and this
trick was required, placing PORTIONS of the EMS memory in view
of the processor for each memory access.

In this same vein, I was under the impression that SMARTDRV intercepted
ctrl-alt-del and flushed the cache before allowing the machine to reboot.
I was running SMARTDRV with a 7MB cache (when not in Windows, I have no
other use for the memory). After running PKUNZIP on a large archive, I
tried the 3-finger salute as an experiment. The machine rebooted
immediately (oops...). After the reboot, I found a directory full of
zero-length files and a huge number of orphaned clusters crying their eyes
out in the cold.
My machine is a Samsung 386SX clone. About the only unusual thing in my
setup is KEYB.COM, which I am using to get around a nasty case of "sticky
shift key" syndrome.
Can anyone confirm a case of SMARTDRV successfully intercepting
ctrl-alt-del?

SMARTDRV tries. If you install another TSR later which hooks INT 9
& doesn't pass ctrl-alt-del to SMARTDRV, it can't. KEYB is one such
TSR.

Subject: IBM Value Point systems
I am part of a team that is investigating the pros/cons of IBM Value Point
systems for a potential purchase. Pricing is down to very near Gateway (which
would otherwise be the choice), so the issues have more to do with reliability,
compatibility, expandability and maintenance costs. Anyone with any experiences
to relate will be much appreciated. Here's some specific questions:
1) Can you replace existing floppy and hard disks with off-the-shelf stuff
like Seagate, Connor or Teac?
2) Do you have to buy expansion ram from IBM or is it off-the-shelf simms?
3) Will the Value Point run the Microsoft NT demo? (We know it won't run MS
OS/2 & Lan Manager)
Any input will be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Subject: memory trouble on 486 computer
dear netters,
We recently bought two 486DX/33 computers. We encounter a weird
memory related error which crashes the systems painfully.
Symptoms
* In Windows with graphics applications suddenly the system freezes
and displays "Memory parity error-System halted".
* In other software which is memory consuming the system will crash
or get stuck or boot suddenly.
* Checkit crashes on memory testing of the first 0-20k.
Now all this points to a bad chip, BUT
* If I remove EMM386.EXE from the CONFIG.SYS Checkit runs O.K.
* The same symptoms are appearing on two different computers
The CONFIG.SYS for testing is:
device=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
device=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE noems
DOS=HIGH,UMB
The system is Dos 5. Computer 486i DX, 8 Mb Ram, IDE drives, ISA bus,
VGA screen.
The boot information says:
PhoenixView VGA Compatible Bios Version B 1.00 07
AMI BIOS
OPTi 82C495 for 486 Auto
The MSDOS 5 readme file says:
"If your system includes a Phoenix BIOS and MS-DOS 5.0 doesn't work correctly,
try adding a /machine:1 or /machine:8 swicth to the DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS command
in your CONFIG.SYS file".
I tried this. It didn't work. The way Microsoft formulates this ("TRY"!)
trouble is apparently known to them, but unspecified to us.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

Netters,
I have the same problem that David de Leeuw
<david@BGUMAIL.BGU.AC.IL> mentioned on March 4.
My configuration is slightly different:
I have 16 MB of RAM, run DRDOS 6.0 (emulates DOS 3.31).
Computer 486i DX, IDE drives, ISA bus, VGA screen.
The CONFIG.SYS for testing (now) is:
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS NOVIDEOFILL X=CC00-CDA0 RAM
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 C:\VGA\TVGACRTC.SYS
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 C:\SCSI\NECCDR.SYS /D:NECCD
SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /P /E:1280
BREAK=OFF
HIBUFFERS=40
FILES=99
FCBS=8,8
FASTOPEN=0
LASTDRIVE=F
HISTORY=OFF
COUNTRY=001,,C:\DOS\COUNTRY.SYS
HIDOS=ON
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /R:3 C:\VGA\TANSI.SYS
I have tested with several different CONFIG.SYS files.
The boot information says:
Trident TVGA BIOS C3.0
1024K VGA MODE
ROM BIOS (c)1990 American Megatrends, Inc.
P486DX/33_WB IVN 1.0 1991.8
The bios is:
AMI BIOS 06/06/91
I have tried various exclusions from the loadhi memory in the first
line of CONFIG.SYS such as:
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS NOVIDEOFILL X=C900-C9FF X=CC00-CDFF
X=D900-D9FF X=DD00-DDFF X=F600-F7FF RAM
to no avail. Memory checks out fine.
Any ideas ?? I guess that it is best to send them to David as a
central source. "david@bgumail.bgu.ac.il"

There is a bad memory chip in your computer. Buy one additional chip (or
borrow it from a friend or computer dealer) and replace one-by-one all your
chips, until the error occures.. The best program -as far as I know- to
check the SIMs in Checkit. It is capable to test every address. If checkit
don't crash, you've found the bad sims.. It is possible in most PC bios
chips to disable the partity error checking, but I recommend not to use
this option.. (Preventing the errormessage comming up is not a good
solution.. you should replace the bad memory chip..

NOTE! When using Windows 3.0 or 3.1 you may have to include to system.ini:s
386 Enhanced section a following text:
EmmExclude=A000-FFFF (You can find a proper setting by trying again and again.)
NOTE! You should have a boot disk to prepare for a non-booting hard disk.
In my system this would work.

Subject: Programmer Editor
Hi,
I am looking for a small, quick, and easy to learn shareware text editor
for programmers. It should have adjustable tab stops, and automatic
block indent (to indent long if-then blocks). I recently found TED
(Tiny Edit v3.0) but it does not indent blocks and I cannot adjust the
tabs. Other than that, it appears to be a nice, fast editor.
What I mean by automatic block indent is this....if I indent a line
of text and press return, then the cursor should return to the column
that the previous line started in. The DOS EDIT command does this,
as do the Turbo Pascal and Turbo C editors.
If you know where I can grab something similar to this, please email
me directly at DGS6759@UCS.USL.EDU. I was recently forced to unsubscribe
from this list.
thanks,
Daryl Spillman
